Camotes Islands: Nature and More

Consuelo Pier in Pacijan Island of Camotes Islands

Camotes Islands are a group of islands full of mysteries. I felt it when I was there, from the time I landed on the pier of Consuelo in Camotes Island (it’s Pacijan Island and Poro but they were already interconnected and looks like just one island so I call it Camotes Island, the island with shape like the number 8), the simplicity and serenity of the island welcomes you. The island itself is a land of forests and farm, and by the time we went to ride a motorcycle and tour around the island, I saw a lot of mangrove trees. Nature is Camotes indeed.

Ferry from Cebu to Camotes

Jomalia shipping ferry passengers during our trip to Camotes Island

One needs to ride a slow ferry (not a fast craft) to Camotes from Cebu. The ferry ride was approximately two hours but if there is only a bridge that connects mainland Cebu to Camotes Island then it would not even take you an hour to reach the island. And for two hours I spent time seeing seas and sniffing the salty air blowing through the sea craft.

Camotes Island Tours (Tips and Guide)

Clear turqouise waters will welcome you upon getting nearer to the Camotes Island in Central Philippines. (Consuelo wharf, Pacijan Island of Camotes Islands)

Camotes Islands (or Camotes Group of Islands) are islands located somewhere in the middle of bigger islands of Cebu, Bohol and Leyte. Camotes is composed of four different islands namely Poro, Pacijan, Tudela and Tulang. The different municipalities are Poro, Tudela, San Francisco (the town center) and Pilar. Only the town of Pilar in Ponson Island needs another ferry ride once you get to Consuelo port from the wharf in Danao City. Now Camotes Islands slowly emerge as another tourist hub in Central Philippines because of its simple beauty and amazing nature wonders like Lake Danao Park, Timubo Cave and their white sand beaches. Plus a community of friendly people.

It is located just one block from Rizal Park (Or Luneta Park) and facing Quirino Grandstand. If you are on a tour to the different Manila heritage sites like Intramuros and National Museum, you might as well want to include Manila Ocean Park on your list. Planning a Road Trip to Ambuklao

This green mini water lake was created by the spill side of the Ambuklao Dam near the spillway. (Ambuklao, Bokod, Benguet)

Ambuklao (or Ambuclao as others spell it) is a barangay in Bokod, Benguet, a town situated about one to one and a half hour from the city center of Baguio. It is mountainous over Ambuklao, and somewhere over the mountains a crafted lake was formed sometime in the 1950s. With a depth of more than 750 meters, the Ambuklao Dam serves as an energy source in the island of Luzon. This dam about 36 kilometers northeast of Baguio City is slowly becoming popular because of its manmade scenic view.

And a club of travelers explore not only because they want to speculate new festivities and culture but also to meet new people along the way of the so-called journey. Fort San Pedro: Another Cebu Historical Attraction

Facade of Fort San Pedro, another historical tourist spot in Cebu City.

Being the smallest triangular and oldest fort in the Philippines, Fort San Pedro in Cebu City is another historical attraction that heritage tourists may want to check out. Fort San Pedro in Cebu was constructed under the command of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi though the exact date of construction the stone fort was never identified. This triangular piece of history faces both land and sea and the main purpose of the structure was mainly for defense, as evidenced by its still existing centuries-old cannon. Now, Fort San Pedro can be your next tourist spot for your heritage walk tour in Cebu City.

Magellan’s Cross: Cebu City Living Legend

The Magellan's Cross in Cebu City serves as a symbol of how Christianity started in the Philippine Islands.

It was back on April 21, 1521 when a European explorer under the name of Fernando Magallanes, or Ferdinand Magellan from Portugal (but working under the monarchy of Spain) landed on the rich island of Cebu. He actually met and befriended the native chief, Raja Humabon that time. Both of them went well, and as a matter of fact, Raja Humabon accepted Christianity and let him and his men be baptized. As a sign of this significant event in the history of Cebu, Ferdinand Magellan planted a cross as an insignia of the spread of Christianity on the island. Now, this cross known as the “Magellan’s Cross” is a key tourist destination in Cebu.

Basilica del Sto. Nino: Cebu Church Legacy

Basilica del Sto. Nino, another Cebu church, is indeed one of the must-see historical tourist attractions in Cebu.

The Basilica Minore del Sto. Nino of Cebu is a church and convent located just across one block from Cebu Cathedral and another famous Cebu tourist spot, the Magellan’s Cross. It was said to be built according to the urban plans by Legaspi to allocate a piece of land where a church must be constructed on that lot where the relic of Sto. Nino was found. The image of Sto. Nino was a sculpture being the Holy Child Jesus, discovered and preserved inside a wooden box by Spanish expeditors where it was left behind after some years. Now, Basilica del Sto. Nino in Cebu City drives in flocks of devotees and tourists who faithfully believe in the miracles and power of Sto. Nino.

Cebu Cathedral: A Piece of Inheritance

Cebu Cathedral in Cebu City is indeed a piece of inheritance devoted to the Cebuanos.

The Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral in Cebu City is one of the many historical landmarks that tourists can visit in this rich province of Cebu in the Central Philippines. Not only does it serve as a tourist spot for travelers and visitors, it also serves as a great worship place for Christians who are solely devoted to their religiousness. Cebu Cathedral is also a piece of inheritance from the past, as it had undergone a series of construction-reconstruction phases from bishops and leaders over their inductive-deductive reasons to build the church near the Parian district of Cebu City.
