Walk through the Past of Aurora in Museo de Baler

Museo de Baler, Baler, Aurora

“My dearest Padre: My pulse is shaken and I am horrified in face of the burtal and atrocious acts of the night of the 4th. Some insurrectos entered the town, it is said that coming from San Miguel de Mayumo and Binangonan, and they incited rebellion to the whole village in such a way, that none of them have remained loyal to us.” - Fr. Dionisio Luengo, Baler. October 6, 1897.

To know one’s history, you need to learn its background. One can see a short glimpse of everything a town has undergone by simply visiting one of its museums. In this case, Aurora has its Museo de Baler (Baler Museum), a short distance from other tourist spots such as Baler Church, Quezon Ancestral House and the so-called rolling stores. By visiting it, you will get to see a broader view of what Baler looks like in the past, and probably have the idea on how to preserve it for the next generations to see.

But then your Vigan City tour will never be complete unless you visit the most popular historical landmark where old ancestral houses and century old structures rest. This is also where you can buy pasalubong and souvenirs. It’s no other than a Spanish street under the ancient title “Calle Crisologo”.

Casa Gorordo Museum | Cebu City

Another abode in the past, Casa Gorordo Museum in Cebu is a part of the heritage tour.

The Casa Gorordo Museum is another old house located along Lopez Jaena Street, right turn from Yap-Sandiego ancestral house and a few meters from it. The ancestral house was built sometime in the middle of 1800s by Alejandro Reynes y Rosales, which then bought in 1863 by a Spanish merchant under the name of Juan Isidro de Gorordo, hence the name. Casa Gorordo Museum is part of a rich heritage tour, following after the Colon Obelisk, Heritage of Cebu Monument and the Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House in the Parian District of Cebu City.

Cebu Art and Sculpture: Heritage of Cebu Monument

Depicting Cebu history and culture, Heritage of Cebu Monument in Cebu City is truly Cebu art and sculpture.

The Heritage of Cebu Monument in Cebu City (located originally in the Parian District) is a work of both art and sculpture depicting the most important events that happened in the history of Cebu. The sculpture signifies the time of Rajah Humabon up to the beatification of Cebuano martyr Pedro Calungsod. The Cebu Heritage Monument showcases the works of its artist Edgardo Castillo. It was constructed in 1997 and inaugurated in late 2000. Now, the Heritage of Cebu Monument serves as one of the many historical landmarks of Cebu City together with the ancestral house a few steps from it.

Tam-Awan Village: Baguio Culture and Art

Artwork like this one is displayed inside Tam-Awan Village, plus there are huts that define the Baguio culture.

Baguio culture and art fused together is what Tam-Awan Village is known for. Tam-Awan means “viewpoint”, a “viewdeck” or “tanawan” in Tagalog. That is because the “village” itself has its own peak where one can see a sky of horizon and a blast of sunset, facing the seas of La Union. Well I didn’t actually see the sunset that was referred to here because it was foggy that time when we visited the place. Tam-Awan Village is an art gallery and cultural museum. It features the native huts typical to the different towns in the Cordillera region. They brought the culture, bundled it and made it into a tourist destination. Tam-awan Village is a part of the jigsaw puzzle called Baguio.

Philippine Military Academy (PMA): Baguio Premier School

Philippine Military Academy  (PMA) in Baguio City is the most prestigious military school in the Philippines.

Philippine Military Academy (PMA) is a premier military school in the Philippines where the next Armed Forces of the Philippines officers were honed. Philippine Military Academy is a training school established back in 1936, and is located in Baguio City. It was said to be rooted from a military school established in Malolos, Bulacan in 1898 (Academia Militar) by Emilio Aguinaldo. It was modeled then after the United States Military Academy with the officers from the Philippine Scout. After the world war, it was reopened in 1947 at Camp Allen in Baguio but because of the rising number of trainees and need for a wider ground it was moved to its present location in Loakan, Baguio City.

Paint the Baguio Graffiti at Bencab Museum

Redefine art with graffiti in Bencab Museum, Baguio City.

Bencab Museum in Baguio City is a museum dedicated to the finest of the arts and the most artistic of the crafts in Baguio. It is a home of well painted art galleries and a realization of gifted hands which can draw things out of bare imagination. On the other hand, graffiti are writings and drawings painted or posted on a wall surface without authorization. You can see a lot of them on public walls and suburbs but well you don’t have to preach the one who painted it on a wall adjacent to Bencab Museum; it’s a part of the museum itself and as I have said, it’s a Baguio graffiti that stands out of the rest because of its distinct feature of culture and imagination merged together.
