Mt. Osdung, Benguet: The Trail and the Top Load

A lonely pine tree at the peak of Mount Osdung in Kibungan, Benguet

Mount Osdung is a mountain situated in the ranges of Cordillera in Kibungan, Benguet. It is said to be the 16th highest mountain in the Philippines. “Osdung” or “usdung” is a Kankanaey term (also Ilocano) which similarly means “to stoop” or as in bend your body to look downwards, as when you are on top of a summit or cliff. In Tagalog it means “tumingin sa ibaba (ng bundok) ”. Mount Osdung day hike is one of the easiest mountain climb you can actually do when you are in the highlands of the Cordillera Region.

The Christmas Village features dwarf houses, kids’ playground and a stage where acts are shown. Baguio is colder in December and experiencing the cold weather in this theme park, plus the feel of its “snow show” is a must.

Planning a Day Hike to Mount Osdung

Wonderful views of Cordillera Mountains en route to Mt. Osdung for a day hike.
Mount Osdung, having the 16th highest peak in the entire Philippines, is an easy day hike for mountaineers. It lies in the municipality of Kibungan, Benguet and is situated about 3 hours from Baguio City. The jump-off point is at Collideng Junction in Buguias, Benguet (marker is the yellow Trader’s Café) and from there an hour of walk trail is expected along the way to the peak of Mt. Osdung. It may be one of the easiest climb but the view from the mountain is awesome. Road trails going to Sagada, cabbage farms, mountain walls and other peaks can be viewed 360 degrees.

Roxas Boulevard and Manila Bay at Night

Roxas Boulevard near Manila Bay at night.

Roxas Boulevard is one of the main key streets to the overlooking view of Manila Bay sunset in the city of Manila (but there is this Seaside Boulevard across the SM Mall of Asia which is a far better place to view the sunset). It looks perfect on postcards, particularly the orangey sunset of the bay. But once you get in touch to this boulevard you will notice a horde of informal settlers who really don’t have homes to stay, vendors scattered around selling candies and cigarettes maybe and children who look like they don’t have parents at all. Roxas Boulevard and Manila Bay should have been a romantic place for lovers who speculate the beauty of the setting sun, but that should have been long story ago. I don’t think it is still like that today.

Cebu Suggested Itineraries & List of Expenses

Cebu tourist spots included in my own Cebu itinerary for the trip

Here are some of my suggested itineraries if you want to have a Cebu trip for the first time. Our own itinerary is a bit tiresome because it requires lots of walking so you may also want to consider hiring a cab for the whole tour. But if you are like us who are on a tight budget, our itinerary will work for you!

Our three days and two nights Cebu itinerary which includes Camotes island trip:

How to Go to Cebu Taoist Temple and Restaurants

Cebu map with keypoints like Cebu Taoist Temple area and others.

Unlike the other touristy places in Cebu like the Magellan’s Cross and Basilica, the Taoist Temple of Cebu is a bit farther than them. To go to to Cebu Taoist Temple from the Magellan’s Cross area (Legaspi Street):

Cebu Otap and Pasalubong Unltd

From upper left (clockwise direction), Cebu pasalubong otap, barquillos, peanut browas, galletas, mini mamon and Cebu turrones.

Aside from the fishy madness you can take home from the ultimate dried fish market of Taboan, you can also head to Shamrock near the Cebu Cathedral where you can buy Cebu pasalubong such as otap, turrones, galletas and mamon.

A Cebu Fishy Story in Taboan Market

Pooh of Banana Split (ABS-CBN) negotiating with the vendor of danggit in Taboan Market, Cebu.

If you smell something fishy in Cebu, it couldn’t be probably about the corrupt officials and their unfinished projects, but you might just be near the vicinity of the ultimate dried fish market known as the Taboan Market. The Taboan Market in the City of Cebu should be one of your top destinations for pasalubong as a variety of dried fish—from danggit to pusit to fish bones—are all sold here.

Famous Cebu Lechon at CnT Lechon

One of the best tasting Cebu lechon is inside this restaurant. (CnT Lechon, Cebu)

It cannot be Cebu without the famous lechon, like Baguio linked to “pinikpikan” or Sagada traced to “etag”. If you are familiar with all the strange words I quoted then probably you already tasted what used to be the ultimate local food with its corresponding town. I do not know what Cebu lechon makes it different from the other lechon served in the other parts of the country, and so I went to Cebu City for its undying popularity of Cebu lechon—at CnT Lechon Restaurant.

Cebu’s Authentic! Puso and Larsian BBQ

“Alam mo, Larsian BBQ ako.”
Bakit?
“Kasi ikaw naman ang PUSO ko.”

Puso, chorizo and chicken inasal all delightfully bought in Larsian sa Fuente. (Fuente, Cebu)
BOOM. When people say “puso” and you are in Cebu, they do not certainly mean the heart. Puso in Cebu is an authentic Cebuano style cooked rice, wrapped and weaved in grass leaves similar to what Ilocanos and Pangasinense cook as “patopat”, a kakanin. The only difference, “puso” is rice without the flavors (and that cooking style will make the big difference), “patopat” is malagkit (sticky) rice dipped in “tagapulot” or brown sugar. And if you plan to try the heartiest cooked rice, it’s a must to bond it with Larsian barbeque, another Cebu authentic food. Drooling to taste these Cebu dishes? Puso and Larsian style BBQs are a must-try!

Baguio Lantern Parade by Saint Louis University (SLU)

Brightly lit lanterns star the annual parade of crafts made by Saint Louis University faculty and students. (Session Road, Baguio City)

If you enjoy watching the street dance parade and the flower float parade during Panagbenga Festival in Baguio which usually happens on the last weekend of February and you insist to see more of Baguio culture, arts and festivities, then make sure to enlist either December 1 or the first Saturday of December so you witness another parade. The Baguio Lantern Parade (or SLU Lantern Parade) is an annual fiesta featuring the handwork of students of Saint Louis University (SLU) via the showcase of specially crafted lanterns. It’s a whole day booth show, lantern carnival, dance series and a spectacle of fireworks.

Tasting Cebu Sutukil Style: AA BBQ Restaurant

The undeniably cheesy baked scallops of this Cebu Sutukil style restaurant, AA BBQ.

When you say Cebu Sutukil style, you mean lining up to the seafood and meat section of the restaurant, pick your favorite uncooked fish or chicken or liempo, then tell the kitchen crew how to cook it (or tell them to cook it until its good). That means all the served food are fresh, as you are the ones who chose it before they were cooked. I hungered of experiencing this one-of-a-kind Cebu style, and thus we went to try it at The Original AA BBQ restaurant located just across the Plaza Independencia in Cebu City.

Cebu Taoist Temple in Lahug

The dragon inside the Cebu Taoist Temple. (Beverly Hills subdivision, Lahug, Cebu)

Cebu Taoist Temple in Beverly Hills, Lahug is a worship place for devotees who follow the teachings of Lao Zi, a Chinese philosopher. The temple was constructed by Chinese groups sometime in the 70’s, at an elevation of approximately 300 meters with a blueprint of the stairs copying the architecture of The Great Wall of China. During Wednesdays and Sundays, worshippers climb the 81 steps of the Taoist Temple, which represent the 81 chapters of the Taoism scriptures. As the Cebu Taoist Temple is a bit far from the other touristy places like Magellan’s Cross and the Basilica del Sto. Nino, I suggest it to be part of a side trip. Yet it’s one of the best beautiful temples I visited in the country so far.

How to Go to Camotes Island (with Maps)

Camotes Island map

Camotes Island is an island of different tourist destinations like LakeDanao Park, Timubo Cave and Santiago White Beach. To go to this island, you have to ride a ferry from the Danao port.

Timubo Cave and Santiago White Sand Beach in Camotes

The powdery white sand beach of Santiago in Camotes Island.

Timubo Cave is an underground cave featuring gigantic stalactites and stalagmites with an end destination of a crystal clear water pool. On the other hand, Santiago White Sand Beach (or Santiago White Beach) in Camotes is a public beach with cream colored sand shore. Both tourist attractions are a must see when one visits Camotes. Aside from Lake Danao Park where you can enjoy kayaking, Camotes is also a cool place to swim underground pools and play beach volleyball.

Lake Danao Park: Kayaking in Camotes

Kayaking in Camotes is the best part of Lake Danao.

Lake Danao Park is one of the gateway parks in Camotes to seeing the biggest lake in the island which is Lake Danao. In this park you will feel the ambiance of a nature within the range of a water body bordered with tree-covered hills and mountains. It is a place where lost people can go to find inner peace and resurrect their souls. In Lake Danao you can go kayaking in Camotes, ride a “sakanaw” or just do your best jump shot with a picturesque backdrop. When you go to Camotes in Cebu province, don’t forget to see and enjoy what Lake Danao Park offers.

Camotes Islands: Nature and More

Consuelo Pier in Pacijan Island of Camotes Islands

Camotes Islands are a group of islands full of mysteries. I felt it when I was there, from the time I landed on the pier of Consuelo in Camotes Island (it’s Pacijan Island and Poro but they were already interconnected and looks like just one island so I call it Camotes Island, the island with shape like the number 8), the simplicity and serenity of the island welcomes you. The island itself is a land of forests and farm, and by the time we went to ride a motorcycle and tour around the island, I saw a lot of mangrove trees. Nature is Camotes indeed.

Ferry from Cebu to Camotes

Jomalia shipping ferry passengers during our trip to Camotes Island

One needs to ride a slow ferry (not a fast craft) to Camotes from Cebu. The ferry ride was approximately two hours but if there is only a bridge that connects mainland Cebu to Camotes Island then it would not even take you an hour to reach the island. And for two hours I spent time seeing seas and sniffing the salty air blowing through the sea craft.

Camotes Island Tours (Tips and Guide)

Clear turqouise waters will welcome you upon getting nearer to the Camotes Island in Central Philippines. (Consuelo wharf, Pacijan Island of Camotes Islands)

Camotes Islands (or Camotes Group of Islands) are islands located somewhere in the middle of bigger islands of Cebu, Bohol and Leyte. Camotes is composed of four different islands namely Poro, Pacijan, Tudela and Tulang. The different municipalities are Poro, Tudela, San Francisco (the town center) and Pilar. Only the town of Pilar in Ponson Island needs another ferry ride once you get to Consuelo port from the wharf in Danao City. Now Camotes Islands slowly emerge as another tourist hub in Central Philippines because of its simple beauty and amazing nature wonders like Lake Danao Park, Timubo Cave and their white sand beaches. Plus a community of friendly people.

Manila Ocean Park Featuring Asian Ghost House

Asian Ghost House inside Manila Ocean Park, Manila City.

Manila Ocean Park in the City of Manila is a theme park consisting of the Oceanarium, Trails to Antarctica (where penguins feel at home), dancing fountain, Jellies Exhibit and a lot more. It is located just one block from Rizal Park (Or Luneta Park) and facing Quirino Grandstand. If you are on a tour to the different Manila heritage sites like Intramuros and National Museum, you might as well want to include Manila Ocean Park on your list. Just recently to attract more tourists, with Indochina Strings Philippines, they added “Asian Ghost House”, a mini-horror house in tune of Halloween this month of October.

Ambuklao Dam: A Benguet Dam Travel Story

This water reservoir of the Ambuklao Dam in Benguet has a scenic angle of skies and mountains over lake.
Ambuklao Dam was created to sustain a chunk in the necessity of electricity of people over Luzon Island in the Philippines. It was constructed sometime in the 1950s and eventually took more than 6 years of completion. At that time, the Ambuklao Dam was said to be the largest and highest dam in the East Asia. Other than its main purpose to generate power, Ambuklao Dam in Bokod, Benguet also serves as a flood control structure as well as irrigation to the fields of Pangasinan.

Planning a Road Trip to Ambuklao

This green mini water lake was created by the spill side of the Ambuklao Dam near the spillway. (Ambuklao, Bokod, Benguet)

Ambuklao (or Ambuclao as others spell it) is a barangay in Bokod, Benguet, a town situated about one to one and a half hour from the city center of Baguio. It is mountainous over Ambuklao, and somewhere over the mountains a crafted lake was formed sometime in the 1950s. With a depth of more than 750 meters, the Ambuklao Dam serves as an energy source in the island of Luzon. This dam about 36 kilometers northeast of Baguio City is slowly becoming popular because of its manmade scenic view.

Travel and Meet New People

Pinoy Travel Bloggers during the Ambuklao Trip last October 7, 2012.

A lot of people travel because they want to see new sites they have never been to. A lot of them travel because they want to try new adventures out of these places. And a club of travelers explore not only because they want to speculate new festivities and culture but also to meet new people along the way of the so-called journey. Traveling does not only give us surprises, it also gives you the courage to become who you really are by meeting these people who have the same interests with you.

Fort San Pedro: Another Cebu Historical Attraction

Facade of Fort San Pedro, another historical tourist spot in Cebu City.

Being the smallest triangular and oldest fort in the Philippines, Fort San Pedro in Cebu City is another historical attraction that heritage tourists may want to check out. Fort San Pedro in Cebu was constructed under the command of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi though the exact date of construction the stone fort was never identified. This triangular piece of history faces both land and sea and the main purpose of the structure was mainly for defense, as evidenced by its still existing centuries-old cannon. Now, Fort San Pedro can be your next tourist spot for your heritage walk tour in Cebu City.

Magellan’s Cross: Cebu City Living Legend

The Magellan's Cross in Cebu City serves as a symbol of how Christianity started in the Philippine Islands.

It was back on April 21, 1521 when a European explorer under the name of Fernando Magallanes, or Ferdinand Magellan from Portugal (but working under the monarchy of Spain) landed on the rich island of Cebu. He actually met and befriended the native chief, Raja Humabon that time. Both of them went well, and as a matter of fact, Raja Humabon accepted Christianity and let him and his men be baptized. As a sign of this significant event in the history of Cebu, Ferdinand Magellan planted a cross as an insignia of the spread of Christianity on the island. Now, this cross known as the “Magellan’s Cross” is a key tourist destination in Cebu.

Basilica del Sto. Nino, another Cebu church, is indeed one of the must-see historical tourist attractions in Cebu.

The Basilica Minore del Sto. Nino of Cebu is a church and convent located just across one block from Cebu Cathedral and another famous Cebu tourist spot, the Magellan’s Cross. It was said to be built according to the urban plans by Legaspi to allocate a piece of land where a church must be constructed on that lot where the relic of Sto. Nino was found. The image of Sto. Nino was a sculpture being the Holy Child Jesus, discovered and preserved inside a wooden box by Spanish expeditors where it was left behind after some years. Now, Basilica del Sto. Nino in Cebu City drives in flocks of devotees and tourists who faithfully believe in the miracles and power of Sto. Nino.

Cebu Cathedral: A Piece of Inheritance

Cebu Cathedral in Cebu City is indeed a piece of inheritance devoted to the Cebuanos.

The Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral in Cebu City is one of the many historical landmarks that tourists can visit in this rich province of Cebu in the Central Philippines. Not only does it serve as a tourist spot for travelers and visitors, it also serves as a great worship place for Christians who are solely devoted to their religiousness. Cebu Cathedral is also a piece of inheritance from the past, as it had undergone a series of construction-reconstruction phases from bishops and leaders over their inductive-deductive reasons to build the church near the Parian district of Cebu City.

Lost in Ambuklao! A Benguet Dam Video Story

I've never seen a "dam thing" before (yes it's "dam" or water reservoir) and to see one is a goal. It's my first time last Baguio Day to go to Ambuklao Dam in  Benguet. I went there alone and I did it successfully. It's my first solo flight travel and believe it or not, I was the only traveler when I went there. My first solo travel plus my first time to see an awesome water reservoir (hmmm maybe I can compare it to Mt. Pinatubo's crater lake) plus I was the only traveler plus my first time to make HD travel video for Travex Travels! A bunch of "first times" for me and another page of Philippine wonders for you. If you have never seen one like this before, try to see it this year!

Casa Gorordo Museum | Cebu City

Another abode in the past, Casa Gorordo Museum in Cebu is a part of the heritage tour.

The Casa Gorordo Museum is another old house located along Lopez Jaena Street, right turn from Yap-Sandiego ancestral house and a few meters from it. The ancestral house was built sometime in the middle of 1800s by Alejandro Reynes y Rosales, which then bought in 1863 by a Spanish merchant under the name of Juan Isidro de Gorordo, hence the name. Casa Gorordo Museum is part of a rich heritage tour, following after the Colon Obelisk, Heritage of Cebu Monument and the Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House in the Parian District of Cebu City.

An abode in the late 17th century (1600s), the Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House in Cebu City is a must visit heritage site.

The Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House in Parian District of Cebu City is one of the oldest existing structural residential houses in the Philippines. It was constructed out of coral stones and woods, by a family of Chinese merchants sometime in the late 17th century. History tells that Parian was a busy barangay and the community houses were commonly designed with a second storey. To date, this “Balay nga Bato ug Kahoy” (house of wood and stones) stands still despite wrecks and fate of time at the corner of Mabini and Lopez-Jaena streets in Cebu City.

Cebu Art and Sculpture: Heritage of Cebu Monument

Depicting Cebu history and culture, Heritage of Cebu Monument in Cebu City is truly Cebu art and sculpture.

The Heritage of Cebu Monument in Cebu City (located originally in the Parian District) is a work of both art and sculpture depicting the most important events that happened in the history of Cebu. The sculpture signifies the time of Rajah Humabon up to the beatification of Cebuano martyr Pedro Calungsod. The Cebu Heritage Monument showcases the works of its artist Edgardo Castillo. It was constructed in 1997 and inaugurated in late 2000. Now, the Heritage of Cebu Monument serves as one of the many historical landmarks of Cebu City together with the ancestral house a few steps from it.

Colon Street: Philippines’ Oldest Calle in Cebu

The obelisk marker at Colon Street in Cebu signifies its historical root as the oldest street established in the Philippines.

Colon Street is said to be the oldest street established in the Philippines. It was rooted back to the plans by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi who arrived in the Philippines in 1565, and was named after Christopher Columbus. Now, Colon Street in the heart of Cebu City in Cebu is a busy downtown street lining up stalls, stores, boutiques, business shops, offices, cafes and a lot more. In 2006 there was a plan to rehabilitate the said “calle” to convert it into a tourism zone.

It happened just last April 2012 and somehow it was successful and fun. Never did I know before about other Philippine culture and way of life, particularly the food, and I must say you have to travel all the other 7000 islands of the Philippines to see the difference in culture and travel experiences. And before you can actually do it, I want to share to you simple tips and things to remember if you want to book a flight to the Philippines and prepare for a plane trip for your next travel adventure.
