Paint the Baguio Graffiti at Bencab Museum

Redefine art with graffiti in Bencab Museum, Baguio City.

Bencab Museum in Baguio City is a museum dedicated to the finest of the arts and the most artistic of the crafts in Baguio. It is a home of well painted art galleries and a realization of gifted hands which can draw things out of bare imagination. On the other hand, graffiti are writings and drawings painted or posted on a wall surface without authorization. You can see a lot of them on public walls and suburbs but well you don’t have to preach the one who painted it on a wall adjacent to Bencab Museum; it’s a part of the museum itself and as I have said, it’s a Baguio graffiti that stands out of the rest because of its distinct feature of culture and imagination merged together.

Diplomat Hotel: A Haunted Story

Diplomat Hotel in Baguio

Haunted stories sell like pancakes in Baguio; they are everywhere and every person has their own variation. Other than the Teacher’s Camp and South Drive where ghost stories originate, Diplomat Hotel in Baguio is another treacherous setting for an unnerving horrible story. Believe me, whenever you say Diplomat Hotel when you are in Baguio, people would eventually tell you it’s a haunted place and prior cautions must be taken when planning to go there. I have come across a story told by a Baguio blogger and he told me that he had experienced one. Let me tell you the story.

Baguio’s Diplomat Hotel Ruins

The cross at the Diplomat Hotel ruins in Dominican Hill, Baguio City.

If you are looking for a Baguio hotel where you can stay safe for a night, sleep soundly and have pillow chat with your close friends, book your accommodation at Diplomat Hotel in Baguio. But that should have been long years ago. Because booking a night stay in Diplomat Hotel is already impossible. Staying a night at Diplomat Hotel is horrible. Sleeping inside the place is a tiresome adventure. And pillow chatting in this part of the Dominican Hill will never be with your close friends but ghost friends. Haunted walk tour at night at the Diplomat Hotel ruins, anyone?

World’s Largest 10 Commandments Tablet in Baguio

Go to Dominican Hill in Baguio and stare at the world's largest 10 Commandments tablet.

Late last year (2011), Guinness World Records certified a building-sized edifice (152.90 square meters) carved with the Bible's Ten Commandments as the world’s largest 10 commandments tablet. This new tourist attraction in Baguio is located at the Dominican Hill, right beside the Diplomat Hotel ruins, where the rest of the horror stories were kept. The city government of Baguio told the news that the world’s largest Ten Commandments tablet cost around P5.5-million. Now, the Ten Commandments tablet serves as a symbol that drives away evil spirits.

Stairs to the Lourdes Grotto in Baguio

Get ready to train and flex your leg muscles as you will have to climb more than a hundred steps to the Lourdes Grotto in Baguio.

One of the most popular Baguio attractions was Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, or simply the Grotto (or Lourdes Grotto). The Lourdes Grotto in Baguio was a replica of the Lady of Lourdes in France (Lourdes is a place in France). To go to this Baguio attraction, one has to climb hundreds of steps—stairs that will require you to flex your muscles (especially your legs!). Catholic devotees lit candles upon reaching the Grotto.

How to Go to Baguio Tourist Attractions: Session Road to Mines View Park

How to go to Baguio Cathedral from Bus Terminal:
If you happened to ride on a Genesis Bus/Dagupan Bus/Saulog Bus and dropped off along Gov. Pack Road, all you have to do is to walk your way to Session Road (marker is the Police Station), cross the street until you see the Cathedral. Baguio Cathedral is near upper Session Road and Post Office Loop. If you rode on a Victory Liner Bus (air-con) and dropped off at Victory Liner terminal in Engineer’s Hill, it is better to ride a taxi to the church. Or you can walk your way from Utility Road to Session Road, walk straight until you reach the Circle (roundabout in Session Road), walk a bit until you reach the Cathedral.

Baguio’s The Mansion and Wright Park

The mirror lake at the Mansion.

The Mansion House, or simply The Mansion, is a popular tourist destination in Baguio because of its historical roots in the past. It was built by William Cameron Forbes according to the design by William Parsons in 1908, as a part of the bigger Burnham Plan of Baguio and the City Beautiful Movement. It was devastated in 1945 and was rehabilitated two years after. Now, Baguio’s The Mansion is a rest house of the President of the Philippines. The Wright Park on the other hand is park developed in honor of Governor General Luke E. Wright.

Session Road is the most popular street in the city of Baguio. This is where the central business district is located, right at the heart of Session Road. From a hilly part of the mountains people carved Session Road, constructed the Baguio Cathedral and what follows is history of development and economic activities. The Baguio Cathedral

Baguio Cathedral

The church of Our Lady of the Atonement or commonly known as the Baguio Cathedral, is an old church constructed at the middle part of Session Road. It was established through a catholic mission by missionaries of CICM (Congregatio Immaculati Cordis Mariae) from Belgium in 1907. The Baguio Cathedral became an evacuation center during the Second World War thus saving thousands of lives. Now, the Baguio Cathedral serves as a worship place for Christian communities living in Baguio City. Its preserved architecture also paved its way to becoming one of the must see landmarks of Baguio. It is also one of the many unique churches of the Philippines because of its distinct pinky rose color as an overall exterior design aside from its two towers which is similar to an old castle.

Baguio Day Tours (Destinations for Baguio Tour)

Baguio tour
Mines View Park--one of the many Baguio City tourist spots for an ideal Baguio tour.

Many people want to travel to Baguio and have their own Baguio tour but not everyone knows what exactly the Baguio tourist spots are and how to get there. Basically, people know that Burnham Park is located in Baguio but not all people know that Baguio Burnham Park is located near Session Road, or the bus terminal and they can actually do trips without riding a cab. People’s only resort to touring every Baguio tourist spot is hiring a cab and spend big bucks which they must not be spending. And for those who are on a tight budget, they limit the number of Baguio tourist destinations they visit. Again, if you are yet to plan your very own Baguio day tour (or day and night tours), you have to set this in mind—touring Baguio is NOT expensive (as to what other people know). From Manila excluding the round trip bus fare and accommodation, P1000 is already enough to visit most of the tourist attractions in Baguio plus eat at one of the best Baguio restaurants plus buy souvenirs and pasalubong for two persons!

Part 5 of Leonard Wood Baguio Tour

Botanical Garden of Baguio

Igorot statues inside Botanical Garden, Baguio City, Philippines

Part 4 of Leonard Wood Baguio Tour
After staring at the windows of the famed haunted white house (or after the haunted white house stared at us), we finally decided to move on and walk a few more meters to Teachers’ Camp (just stopped for a while and took pictures but we didn’t manage to get inside as we didn’t have anything to do there). We then crossed a bridge and continued to walk until we reached the Botanical Garden. There are a group of Igorots in costume in front of Botanical Garden, so if you don’t want to miss the photo op with the Igorots (or if you want to be in Igorot costume), then go ahead and take a photo with them. There is a fee of Php 20 per shot, so if you are on a tight budget, just cross the road to the other side, zoom your DSLR and presto, you have it.

Dare to get inside...and walk out alive. (Photo at haunted White House in Baguio)

Part 3 of Leonard Wood Baguio Tour
The sequence should be the other way around, the walk tour first then eat in a restaurant. But we didn’t actually plan to do the walk tour, that’s why eating in a restaurant came first.

Dine in 50’s Diner

Shade of different ice cream shakes only at  50's Diner

Part 2 of Leonard Wood Baguio Tour
We started our walk tour with 50’s Diner. We did not actually plan to walk along Leonard Wood but because we had in hand a camera, we decided to visit some Baguio tourist attractions. We were supposed to eat in a restaurant along Session Road but ended riding a cab to 50’s Diner.
